Teens in the media
I had to create a short video of the representation of teens in the media, heres a link to the clip. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1zwi6Y_EJKY&feature=youtu.be
Preliminary task evaluation.
For our preliminary task we had to show a conversation between two characters whist demonstrating various camera skills. These included things such shot reverse shot, and showing someone going through a door. However we did not include shot reverse shot as the shots, match on action, aswell as demonstrating the use of the 180 degree rule. however our shot reverse shot did not fit in with the scene, and so we decided to film a short clip demonstrate that we was able to do thisHere is the link to this clip. Here is the link to our finished preliminary task. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZm03vjA6og&feature=plcp
Our perliminmary task film idea was about a young girl who had become addicted to drugs and was about her having a run in with a drug dealer in her school. We decided that our audience was for people of a similar age to us, of people aged between 15/16 years old. We decided this because we thought that this topic would not be very appropriate for younger veiwers. Our film genre is drama as we filmed a serious topic and was based on a serious topic issue, there was no comdey elements to our film as well as no action, the film was mainly about the drama of a teenage drug addict's life.
In my group there was 3 of us working on the preliminary task, our roles where split up into different things. My role in the group was to be director. I feel that i could have performed better and made more of the decisions of the shots that where to be used. However i think that because of working with my friends i trusted that there decisions on shots where right and took a more laid back approach to being a director. If i was to be a director again for the main task i think that i should try and take more control within the group.
We were influenced by a number of diffferent tv show that we thought our target audience may also be intrested in, these where this is england as well as skins aswell as the film juno. These shows are also to do with teenage issues such as drug abuse so we was able to get ideas of the issues that are made present. We also felt that these kind of films have a quite a degree of realism which was something that we wanted to come out in our film.
Our group was eager to create a film that was intresting to watch and fun to film however at the same time was also meeting all the requirements of the prelminary task. I think that my group fulfilled the intensions for the task and i was pleased with the outcome. Overall i feel that the that the preliminary task went well as we were able to work well together and took on this task to the best of the ability, however for the main task i feel we will be able to learn from mistakes from this task and produce a even better film.

Rust and bone.
Rust and bone is a film about a brutal bouncer who develops a relationship of strength and emotion with a killer whale trainer. I have not yet had a chance to watch this film however as soon as i get chance to do so i will definitely be watching it! I find that the trailer is especially intriguing as it does not have any dialogue which makes me even more interested in what is actually going to happen in the film.
Here's the trailer for it if you haven't already seen it:

She's out of my league-review
She's out of my league is a rom-com. This film is about an average guy, who meets the 'perfect' woman. However he doesn't have the confidence to see that she is just as into him as he is into her. Here is the trailer for She's out of my league.
Whilst watching this film i was thinking about different ways i could incorporate some of the different shot types and camera angles into my own film. There was a scene where there was a series of close ups on Kirk and his brothers eyes which created a tense atmosphere by switching between the two different close ups. This is something i would like to incorporate in my film as i found that it had a good effect on showing tension between to different sides, as well as demonstrating the rivalry between the two different sides. Here is the clip which demonstrates this:
She's out of my league stars Jay Brachial and Alice Eve who plays Kirk and Molly. So how can a 10 go for a 5? Kirk has no self confidence and for Kirk this has affected his relationships previously as well as with his relationship with Molly. This makes the viewers create a soft spot for Kirk as we want him to find confidence within himself and realise that he's not the hard 5 that he makes himself out to be even though he never went to collage, works in airport security and drives a Nissan. Kirk plays the sensitive guy that just wants to do the right thing, without trying to impress anyone. We are humoured by his acts of kindness, such as being mistaken for a waiter whilst out with Molly which makes her fall for him even more.
This film helps us all to appreciate the people we normally turn our noses up at and pay no interest in as whilst watching this film we realise that they are really 10's and not 5's as they make themselves out to be. We begin to realise that visual no one can be perfect which is how Molly is made out to be, this helps us to appreciate the little 'defects' that everyone has that makes us all far from being the 'perfect' human being we all strive to be.

Editing techniques
Here we have a clip from Fast and Furious which shows a car race between different characters. In this clip the main editing technique used was match on action, which is where the editor edits transitions to match the action of the shot which makes the scne flow well. This creates a fast moving scene where shots are quickly changing from one to the other, which keeps the veiwer on the edge of there seat. Match on action editing works well with Fast and Furious as it is a action movie and so obviously contains alot of fast moving seens, with the use of match on action we are able to have seemless action scenes.

Match on action
This clip of Soul Surfer is a good example of match on action. Around the first 30 seconds of this clip is very action packed as it shows the two competitors racing against each other to catch the next wave. The camera switches from camera angle to camera angle which breaks up the scene to show that they both trying to get somewhere.
My own creation.
Self made scene.
Here is my own creation of a scene where mise en scene could be analaysed. In this scene the postioning of the characters could show the tension that has been created over the possesion of the treasure chest as they are on opposite sides. Also the postioning of the charatcters help to demonstarte the two different sides. that are fighting for the chest. The camera angle of this scene is a long shot which enables us to be able to see all of the characters involved in the scene, the long shot here helps to show tension again as this scence has been priamrly created to show the tension.
Mise en scene
Mean girls.
The lighting in this shot is quite well lit, which could help to simulate a relaxed happy atmosphere. The costume also helps to highlight this too, they are able to wear casual clothes to school which could show that there school life isnt that stressful. The people in the background show the more stressful side to there school life as they all are packed together and seem to be rushing around.

Analysis of a trailer
Horror movie trailer.
A girl begins to veiw a number of exorcisms, in order to get a greater understanding of her own mothers condition. In the trailer we see part of her journey as we see her take part in an exorsisum and also see her meeting her mother for the first time since she has been placed into the mental hospital. This horror movie is based on real events that have happemed which makes it more of a documentry type of horror film.
Sub-genre.
Many genres have sub-genres within them, its a genre within a genre as such, for example a rom-com is a sub-genre. The romance in the film is brought up in a comic way to make it more of an enjoyable film its not just your standard romantic story, as there is usually some sort of comedic twist. An example of a romantic comedy is the ugly truth. In the Ugly truth the main character beis a successful producer and believes that all men are the same, and that her perfect gut is out there somewhere. She then meets mike the host of the ugly truth who promises her any guy she wants. However whilst on this journey Mike and Abby fall for each other. But her new found love with her dream guy gets in the way.
The Ugly Truth trailer.
Hybrid sub-genre.
A hybrid sub genre is two sub genres mixed together.
Genre conventions-comedy
Comedy movies are set out to make people laugh aswell as to enable people to relax and get away from busy lives. In order to do this comedy films normally have a few characters that are the key comedians in the film. Comedy movies normally have some sort of scenario which is blown out of proportion to be funny. In order for the jokes and gags to be funny they need to be perfectly timed and acted out by good quality actors .In comedy the audience responds to two different types of comedy elements the gaga and the comedic situation. There are many different sub categories of comedy such as teen comedies, rom com's and gross out comedys they are all set out to entertain different groups of people and all have different elements of comedy..

Soul surfer
Soul surfer.
This film is based on a true story, the genre of this film is a biography and also drama.
A state of equilibrium on the outset.
At the start of the film we are introduced to Bethany Hamilton who is a keen young surfer hoping to be a pro surfer some day. In the opening scene we see her competing in a completion which she later on goes to win. Whilst at this competition she is scouted by rip curl.
A disruption of the equilibrium.
After being scouted she, goes to train for her next competition in a remote are with her best friend’s brother and dad. Her and her friend are waiting to catch the next wave when her arm is bitten off by a shark. She is then rushed to hospital where she has her arm amputated and losses 60% of her blood.
A recognition of the disruption to the equilibrium
After recovering Bethany trys to get back in the water and struggles to get back to her old ways, of being a amateur surfer.
An attempt to repair the disruption
She goes to her church group where the leader tells he to look at things from another perspective. She then starts to train again and pursue her dream of being a pro surfer, she re enters into a new completion and comes second.
Different character types.
The hero: In soul surfer the hero is Bethany’s best friends dad, Holt Blanchard. When Bethany is attacked by the shark he rushes her to shore and carries her to the car where he begins to drive her to the hospital.
The villain: the villain in this film is the shark that bites off her arm and periodically destroys her dreams of being a pro surfer.
The donor-Sarah hill is the donor in this film as she helps Bethany to view her life from another perspective, as well as to view the bigger picture. Sarah Hill in this film is a church group leader.
The helper: the helper is her best friend Alana Blanchard, she helps Bethany train and to believe that her dream of becoming a pro surfer can still happen.
The Victim: Bethany Hamilton is of course the victim of this film as her dreams are destroyed and is attacked by the shark.
The dispatcher- I would say that the dispatcher is Bethany’s parents as they make her believe that her journey is just beginning as she still has plenty of life to live.

Introduction to media studies
Hey, my names George I'm 16 and live in Hackney. I'm a student at Mossbourne Sixth Form and I study Geography, Psychology, Business Studies and also Media Studies, which is the reason for this blog. I decided to choose Media Studies as i wanted to explore the different ways media influences the world. My favourite movie is Soul Surfer, which is based on a true story. Its about a girl who hopes to be a pro surfer and whilst training is attacked by a shark and loses an arm. However she doesn't let this stop her hopes to be a pro surfer and gets right back into the sea. The film shows how with determination you can get to where you want to be in your life, it is a truely insparational film, which is why its my favourite movie. Here's a link to the trailer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rnSrETbfd5Q&safe=active.
I have a keen intrest in reptiles and would like to think that i may have a career involving them later in life. I have a collection of snakes containg over 30 different indviduals. I have also recently travelled to ecuadour where i volunteered in a animal rehabilitaion centre for two weeks, this involded things such as feeding the animals and other park maitence, this could also be an option for when i finsih school as i would enjoy working in animal conservation as i would be able to see many different parts of the world.
